Idris Elba hospitalized for asthma attack: report

Idris Elba's appearance at the Sunday premiere of his Nelson Mandela biopic came close to being sidelined by a health scare.

The actor reportedly suffered an asthma attack the night before he was scheduled to appear in Johannesburg for the "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" red carpet, according to Sky News.

Elba, 41, apparently fell ill on the plane before it left the UK, was rushed to the hospital and missed a press conference for his film the following morning.

The "Luther" actor plays South African freedom fighter Mandela, 95, in the movie about his life and presidency, based on Mandela's best-selling autobiography.

"Idris is in the hospital after an asthma attack on the plane last night," film producer Anant Singh told reporters, according to UK paper The Independent.

Elba made it to the Sunday night premiere, and appeared healthy as he posed for photos with Mandela's wife Graca Machel and ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, who is played by "Skyfall" actress Naomi Harris in the movie. "Long Walk to Freedom" is set to hit theaters Nov. 29.

A Daily News request to Elba's reps for comment has not yet been returned.
