Emery Kelly, the final Long Islander left in this season’s “X Factor,” after auditions at the Nassau Coliseum, was cut in the last elimination as the judges reached their 16 finalists.
Kelly’s group Forever in Your Mind, formed by the judges after its members didn’t make it individually to the Top 40, was part of mentor Simon Cowell’s Final Four groups after a decent version of the Jonas Brothers’ “Lovebug” that drew mixed reactions.
“I feel like they’re missing a lead singer,” judge Kelly Rowland told Cowell, adding that she had “too much of the cuteness.” However, Cowell kept the group because he felt they had a lot of potential.
Kelly, 15, from Holbrook, offered Cowell an impassioned plea to land a spot in the Final Four, saying, “You had a vision... We are here to make that vision a reality. We are here to win.”
However, when the last of the 10 semifinalists groups, RoXxy Montana, delivered a strong performance of Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror,” Cowell cut Forever in Your Mind to give the Detroit group the final slot on his team.
Cowell’s Final Four is: Alex & Sierra, RoXxy Montana, Sweet Suspense and Restless Road.
"X Factor" goes on a short break for the baseball playoffs, but when it returns on Oct. 29, the Top 16 finalists will be competing live.
