Before the "American Horror Story: Coven" cast got witchy on the new FX series, they were winning Oscars, starring in Nickelodeon shows and appearing on stage.
Take a look at the "Coven" cast before they felt the "American Horror Story" magic.
Jessica Lange in "Tootsie" (1982)
Lange won an Oscar for her role as Julie opposite Dustin Hoffman as Michael Dorsey/Dorothy Michaels. Lange won another Oscar in 1995 for "Blue Sky" and has been nominated four other times. She's appeared in all seasons of "American Horror Story."
Kathy Bates in "Misery" (1990)
Bates won her only Oscar for "Misery," but has been nominated two other times. Throughout her career she's been all over the big and small screen, with roles on "The Office," starring in NBC's "Harry's Law" and appearing in "Primary Colors" and "Titanic."
Angela Bassett in "What's Love Got To Do With It" (1993)
Bassett was nominated for an Oscar for playing Tina Turner in "What's Love Got To Do With It." She took home the Golden Globe for the role and followed up the performance with "How Stella Got Her Groove Back," "Waiting To Exhale" and roles on TV in "Alias" and "ER."
Frances Conroy in "Six Feet Under" (2001)
Conroy made a splash on TV as Ruth Fisher on HBO's "Six Feet Under." Prior to her Golden Globe-winning role, Fisher made guest appearances on shows like "Law & Order" and appeared in a variety of movies. After "Six Feet Under," Conroy appeared in "United States of Tara," "ER," and "Desperate Housewives." Like Lange, she's appeared in all seasons of "American Horror Story."
Emma Roberts in "Unfabulous" (2004)
Roberts, who is Julia Roberts' niece Julia and Eric's daughter, shot to fame on Nickelodeon's "Unfabulous" from 2004-2007. After that, she starred in "Scream 4," "Celeste & Jesse Forever" and "We're The Millers."
Sarah Paulson in "Jack & Jill" (1999)
Before becoming one of Ryan Murphy's muses, Paulson had a series of failed TV projects and noted big screen roles. On TV, Paulson appeared in "Jack & Jill" (pictured in the center with the cast), "Leap of Faith," "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" and "Deadwood." Her big screen roles included "The Other Sister" and "Serenity." Paulson has appeared in all seasons of "American Horror Story."
Lily Rabe in "Steel Magnolias" (2005)
Rabe got her start on the stage before transitioning to the screen. In 2005 she appeared in the revival of "Steel Magnolias" before transitioning to TV with roles on "Law & Order: SVU," "Medium" and "Nip/Tuck." Rabe has also appeared in two episodes of "The Good Wife" and every season of "American Horror Story."
Gabourey Sidibe in "The Big C" (2010)
Sidibe shot to fame after taking on the title role in "Precious." She was nominated for an Oscar her role in the film and followed it up with "Tower Heist" and "Seven Psychopaths." In 2010 she joined the cast of Laura Linney's Showtime drama "The Big C."
Denis O'Hare in "True Blood" (2010)
O'Hare has been active on the screen since 1993, but got the most attention for playing vampire Russell Edgington on "True Blood." His other credits include "The Good Wife," "Law & Order," "Brothers & Sisters" and the first season of "American Horror Story."
Taissa Farmiga in "Higher Ground" (2011)
2011 was a big year for Farmiga. She made her TV debut in the first season of "American Horror Story" and hit the screen with big sister Vera in "Higher Ground." Her other credits include "The Bling Ring" and "Middleton."
Evan Peters in "Phil of the Future" (2004)
Peters got his start on Disney Channel's "Phil of the Future" in 2004. From there, he appeared in the short-lived "Invasion" and on "One Tree Hill." On the big screen he's appeared in "Kick Ass" and "Sleepover." Peters has appeared in all seasons of "American Horror Story."
"American Horror Story: Coven" premieres Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 10 p.m. ET on FX.
