Michelle Williams sandbagged at New Yorker Festival

First Michelle Williams’ “Blue Valentine” character was roughed up onscreen, then she got the live treatment in front of a Q&A audience at W. 23rd St’s SVA Theatre 1.

Three-time Academy Award nominee Williams was shocked when a graphic nude scene between herself and co-star Ryan Gosling was shown to a packed house, while she sat on stage helplessly at a New Yorker Festival chat hosted by the magazine’s film writer David Denby on Saturday.

“They intro’d a clip that was supposed to detail when the cracks in their relationship are starting to show,” said one dumbfounded audience member. Instead, they ran a scene in which a flustered Gosling tries reconnecting sexually with his emotionally withdrawn wife, shouting “What, do you want me to rape you?”

Because of scenes like that in the 2010 film, the controversial “Blue Valentine” initially earned an NC-17 rating, which was later changed to an R-rating.

“It’s a really gut-wrenching scene. It was really out of context and Gosling did most of the talking in the scene,” says our insider.

Our snitch continues, “As soon as the light went back up, Denby got defensive and admitted there was a mistake. He started blaming the AV crew and said weirdly, ‘My wife told me not to pick that clip - and I didn’t!”

Festival organizers were also surprised to see the sex scene onscreen, as they’d decided against it in favor of a different clip, but mistakenly gave the projectionist the wrong bit of tape to play.

“Williams quipped that she’s tried her whole life to avoid being in a situation like this, noting that you film these movies, then forget that anyone is ever going to watch them,” says our insider of Williams’ humbling live-audience experience. “She also questioned Denby's blame game, noting he had a ‘glint’ in his eye.”

Williams said her recollection of shooting the scene was foggy, then went on with the Q&A.

“She picked up the pieces,” says our insider. “She’s a great actress.”

But Denby and the New Yorker didn’t get off the hook that easily. An hour into the Q&A an audience member came to the microphone and pointed out that lost in the blame game was an apology to Williams. Denby assured the audience that he’d asked Williams’ forgiveness during an aside.

Many New Yorker Festival participants attended an after-party at the Standard Hotel, but Williams, unsurprisingly, decided last minute to take a pass.

Reps for Williams had no comment.

APPALLING POLS

Cate Blanchett has weighed in on the D.C shutdown. “It is sad when politics and the machinations of that and the casualties of that [hurt] the citizens,” the “Blue Jasmine” actress told Confidenti@l at a Le Cirque luncheon. “I think it is a sad, sad state of affairs. It is always sad when politics trumps the rights and the health of a country’s citizenship.” The star is widely tipped to pick up an Academy Award nomination for her role in the Woody Allen-directed film.

SOCCER TO ME

Either Prince William doesn’t quite understand the rules of football, or he’s just really protective of his balls. Either way, the Duke of Cambridge, 31, struck a goofy pose while training with players at Buckingham Palace, where he celebrated the Football Association’s 150th anniversary on Monday. Speaking to the players, the royal heir warned, “If anyone breaks a window, you can answer to (the Queen).”

THAT’S IT, IN A NUPTIAL

Lucky her! Stylish newlywed Kate Bosworth is Lucky magazine’s November cover girl, on newsstands Tuesday. Inside, the 30-year-old actress tells the mag, “I had never thought about my wedding dress before I got engaged,” referring to her August nuptials to director Michael Polish. “There are some women who know exactly, from the moment they can speak. But for me I needed to find the man in order to understand the bigger picture.”

TORONTO RAPTURE

Looking far more sane than her “Homeland” character Carrie Mathison, new mom Claire Danes took a casual stroll in Toronto with husband Hugh Dancy and their adorable, chubby-cheeked son Cyrus. Danes was in town to visit her hubby while he films season two of “Hannibal,” where he plays a similarly socially awkward genius of his own. You know what they say, the family that plays crazy people together, stays together.

INCREDIBLE LIKENESS OF BEING

Old and new came together over mini burgers and small talk Saturday night. Flanked by a handful of security guards, Oscar-winning actor and director Sean Penn and Emmy-nominated “Girls” star Adam Driver strolled into Hudson Common for “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” after-party where the duo could’ve been mistaken for brothers. “(Driver) looked like a younger Sean Penn,” said an onlooker who saw the 53-year-old Penn and 29-year-old Driver hanging out in the hotel lounge’s VIP section until 1 a.m.

NEW SPIN ON CHARITY

Kelly Ripa and Anderson Cooper will host a SoulCycle Charity Ride for Fashion Targets Breast Cancer (FTBC) at the West Village SoulCycle at 126 Leroy St. on Oct. 24. Guests can bid for a space on first-row bikes for $1,200 a pop, ride second row for $600, or spin last row for $300 for the ride. First row bikes will also include a “Fighter” cuff from Jennifer Fisher and a FTBC T-shirt.

BIG BLUE HAS BLOWN IT

Thanks to a limp O-and-5 start capped off by Sunday’s humiliating defeat by the Philadelphia Eagles, Giants games will no longer play on Rick’s Cabaret’s flatscreen TVs.

“During the second half, customers were booing at the screens,” says club spokesman Lonnie Hanover, who announced Monday that his club will not show the Giants’ 11 remaining games. According to Hanover, dancers at the Herald Square jiggle joint have complained that “deflated” Big Blue fans aren’t up for a good time while watching their winless team get emasculated week after week.

ALL TWERK AND PLENTY OF PLAY

Following her “Saturday Night Live” and “Today” appearances, Miley Cyrus is sticking around Manhattan, and will be attending her “Bangerz” release party in New York at Finale on Tuesday night. Cyrus is expected to attend the party with pals, where DJ Reach will play her album in its entirety for fans. The (rarely dressed) singer will get a cake and the bash is expected to go in to the wee hours of the morning.

FRETTING FRENZY

Vanilla Fudge guitar player Vinny Martell and the Cure guitarist Porl Thompson will join members of the Les Paul Trio on stage at the Cutting Room tonight at the book release party for “108 Rock Star Guitars,” by Lisa S. Johnson. The book features a foreword by late great guitar whiz Les Paul and a portion of the evening’s proceeds will benefit Paul’s foundation supporting music education and innovation.

HIS HOPES ARE KARDASHED

With two ex-husbands already under her belt, Kim Kardashian is in no rush to walk down the aisle again but baby daddy Kanye West is pressuring the reality star to tie the knot. “Kanye is obsessed with her,” a source close to Kim tells us. “He always has been. He has begged her to get married a few times, it’s Kim that’s saying ‘not yet.’”

Our insider says that momager Kris Jenner is terrified that if Kim doesn’t say yes soon, it will look bad for the family, and that with a baby, it would look better if she was married. Jenner is also warning close friends that this go around will not be a huge, televised affair, like Kim’s disastrous wedding to her 72-day husband, Kris Humphries.

“This will be a small, private event,” the family friend tells us.

When the duo do tie the knot, Kim will likely do it low-key, with a small guest list that will include just family and a few close friends.

HE’ GOT GAME (BEFORE DINNER)

LeBron and Savannah James are settling into married life. The basketball star and his bride were late for dinner at South Beach restaurant Bianca because King James, an Akron Ohio, native, wanted to watch the end of the Ohio State versus Northwestern football game Saturday. The missus didn’t seem to mind. The happy pair, who married on Sept. 14, were all smiles as they walked through the Delano lobby hand in hand en route to the hotel’s Italian eatery.
