Simone Torres, the 19-year-old student from Port Jefferson Station once considered a front-runner in this season’s “The X Factor,” was cut Thursday night.
Torres, who attends the Berklee College of Music, performed an ill-advised, up-tempo version of the Sam Cooke classic “A Change Is Gonna Come” that did not go over well, despite her strong, distinctive voice.
Judge Simon Cowell told Torres that he wished he could have advised her on the song choice. “I would have said you’re not doing that,” he said. “The arrangement of that song was a joke. It was so bad.”
Kelly Rowland offered some support, “You still sang it, mama, don’t get it twisted,” she said.
Her mentor Demi Lovato said she was disappointed. “The song choice wasn’t great,” she told Torres. “I don’t know if I’m seeing a star.”
However, Lovato did put Torres in her Final Four for a time, eventually removing her in favor of Danielle Geimer, the 15-year-old from Northridge, Calif.
After Torres was eliminated, she was comforted backstage by her father, who told her, “You’re still a star in my eyes.”
Lovato finalized her team of girls on last night’s show: Geimer, New York’s Khaya Cohen, California’s Ellona Santiago, and Florida’s Rion Paige.
Kelly Rowland finalized her team of over-25 singers on Wednesday’s show: Michigan’s Jeff Gutt, Oregon’s James Kenney, Nashville’s Rachel Potter and Lillie McCloud, from Rochester, N.Y., and Orlando, Fla.
Next week, the boys and the groups will compete to determine their final teams. Long Island’s Al Calderon is still in the running for a spot in the boys Final Four, while Holbrook’s Emery Kelly is still competing, as part of one of the groups.
