James Woods is starring in a drama off the screen - one he’s pretty much writing and directing himself.
The 66-year-old actor and vocal conservative has been tweeting increasingly vitriolic criticsm of President Obama since the government shutdown began on Oct. 1 - and he revealed Wednesday night that his political rants may well cost him future acting jobs.
“I don't expect to work again. I l think Barack Obama is a threat to the integrity and future of the Republic. My country first,” Woods tweeted in response to a follower’s question.
Certainly, Woods’ view of Obama as “an abomination” runs counter to that of many in the predominatnly Democrat-leaning movie industry:
Woods had joined Twitter in July , with his first salvo being a tongue-lashing of what he called ‘that sh--- rag’ Rolling Stone magazine for its decision to put Boston Marathon bomber Jahar Tsarnaev on the cover.
But the “Ray Donovan” star has become a celebrity hero among right-wingers: he picked up thousands of new social media followers in the past few days. Among them apparently is fellow actor Gary Sinese, who messaged him with words of support, according to Woods himself.
“I have had such a blessed day. My new supporters have numbered in the thousands. My detractors I could count on one hand. I humbly thank you,” Woods tweeted late Wednesday night.
