TORONTO — Harvey Weinstein expanded his already large footprint at the Toronto International Film Festival with the acquisition of one of the festival's hottest properties.

The Weinstein Co. announced Sunday that it has purchased the U.S. distribution rights to John Carney's "Can a Song Save Your Life?" for $7 million, with a commitment of $20 million in advertising. The film, from the director of "Once," stars Mark Ruffalo as a New York record producer and Keira Knightly as an aspiring musician.

Also in Toronto from the Weinstein Co. are "August: Osage County," "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom," "Philomena," "One Chance," the concert film "12.12.12" and the documentary "Salinger." The company additionally acquired John Curran's Australia trek drama "Tracks."
