Julie Chen: My parents 'could not be more proud of me' after plastic surgery confession

Julie Chen opened up Friday about the response to her admission that she had plastic surgery for 'Asian eyes' in order to advance her career.

Chen, 43, revealed her secret on 'The Talk,' explaining that she was motivated by workplace racism to change her physical appearance.

"I felt vulnerable and nervous that the haters who hide behind their computers on the Internet would come out and say mean things," Chen told Us Weekly through her publicist. "And some did. That was expected."

But Chen is still glad that she put her secret out in the open.

"I was pleasantly surprised by all the supportive emails, tweets, and postings from our show's viewers who are not Asian but told me they understood my story. To them I say thank you," she continued.

Chen was anxious about what her parents would say about revealing her secret, but received nothing but encouragement from her family.

"I chickened out telling my mom before the show aired what my secret was," Chen said. "I was overwhelmed with love and relief when she sent me an email right after it aired, saying she and my father could not be more proud of me."

Speaking on "The Talk," Chen said that her parents were involved in her original decision to get surgery when she was a 25-year-old aspiring anchor.

"We had a long conversation about if it would be denying my heritage," Chen said. "It divided my family. Members of my family wanted to disown me if I got it done."

But Chen doesn't regret the change. "I have to live with every decision that I've made," she continued. "And it got me to where we are today. And I'm not going to look back."
