It’s a matter of time.
Anthony Cerniello managed to capture the imperceptible passing of time in a video that illustrates the aging process.

In under five minutes, the short film “Danielle” shows a young child slowly morphing into an elderly woman.
It’s hard to tell how exactly it happens or what parts of the woman’s face to watch. But bit by bit, wrinkle by wrinkle, time pulls and stretches out her skin. Bags form slowly under the woman’s eyes, her lips curl down and her hair turns grey.

Although she is crawling slowly towards her death, it looks as if she’s the happiest at the end.
Cerniello, 38, is a native New Yorker who moved to Los Angeles last year. The film and video editor said he’s spent a lot of time thinking about death now that he is in his late 30s. He admits that after the September 11 attacks in New York, he often found himself becoming anxious and panicked.

“Living through 9/11 makes you think a lot about your own life and death in general,” Cerniello told The New York Daily News. “I guess this was my way of working through my anxiety.”
But he didn’t want the piece to be overly grim. He points out that Danielle looks more worried and stressed out during her 20s and 30s.

“As she gets older, she gets a little more comfortable with herself and her eyes are softer,” Cerniello said.
Danielle is actually a friend of Cerniello’s. But the aging woman in the video isn’t just one person. She is a compilation of women. Cerniello accompanied Danielle to her family’s Thanksgiving party. Along with photographer Keith Sirchio, he took portraits of the females in her family. Over the course of several years, he worked with digital animators and a 3D specialist to create a long shot of ‘Danielle’ blinking, breathing, and getting older.
He wanted it to happen slowly. He said he’s seen some YouTubers download and speed up his video. But he thinks that spoils the effect.
“I wanted it to be as subtle as possible,” Cerniello said. “Like aging is in real life.”
