Taylor Swift lands starring role in 'The Giver'

Taylor Swift has been cast alongside Meryl Streep and Katie Holmes in a new movie tailor-made for her tween audience.

The country crossover cutie will appear in "The Giver," a flick based on Lois Lowry's 1993 young adult novel about a boy's progressive disillusionment with his futuristic, seemingly utopian society, The Weinstein Company announced Friday.

"Crazy Heart" star Jeff Bridges is slated to play the title character while Streep will portray the chief elder.

Other cast members include "Maleficent" actor Brenton Thwaites as Jonas, the young boy at the center of the dystopian drama, and "True Blood" hunk Alexander Skarsgard.

Swift will play Rosemary, the last teen mentored by The Giver before Thwaites' character, Variety.com reported.

The big-screen adaptation is set to start filming Oct. 7 on location in Cape Town, South Africa.

The sci-fi movie, helmed by "Salt" director Phil Noyce, is due to hit theaters next summer.

Swift, 23, recently wrapped the last leg of her Red tour.

The Grammy winner and her new co-star Thwaites gave a hint about their upcoming collaboration when they were spotted in cozy conversation at the recent Toronto International Film Festival, Us Magazine reported.

Movie mogul Harvey Weinsten was even overheard saying, "See you in South Africa" to the two stars who appeared to be flirting, an unidentified source told Us.

"Harvey Weinstein took Taylor to his table and sat her next to Brenton. They had a nice time talking but no numbers were exchanged," a Swift pal told Us Weekly at the time.

Weinstein gushed about "The Giver" in a statement released Friday.

"'The Giver' has always been a favorite book of mine and my kids," he said. "We could not have assembled a more impressive cast for this project behind Lois Lowry's beautiful novel and the directorial talents of Phil Noyce, and are tremendously excited to commence production."

Swift's previous acting credits include a spot on "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," a small role in the 2010 movie "Valentine's Day" and a guest appearance on Zooey Deschanel's TV show "New Girl."
