Actor Tom Hanks is teaming up with CNN to produce the 10-part documentary on the 1960s.

CNN is teaming up with Tom Hanks to produce a 10-part documentary on the 1960s, it was announced Tuesday.

The series will kick off in November with a 90-minute special on the assassination of John F. Kennedy, then resume next April with episodes on politics, music and other elements of the decade.

"From protests to war to human rights, the Beatles, innovative technologies and politics, the 1960s were an extraordinary era," said CNN President Jeff Zucker.

The JFK episode will focus on both the impact of the assassination and the aftermath, including the Warren Commission report.

Subsequent episodes will include both archival footage and interviews with historians and witnesses.

Robert Caro, Robert Dallek and David McCullough will talk, along with Dan Rather, Robert MacNeil and others.

Besides Hanks, producers will include Hanks' long-time HBO partner Gary Goetzman and Mark Herzog.

The series will be a CNN original.
