'Army Wives' honorably discharged by Lifetime after seven seasons

Lifetime played "Taps" Tuesday for its longest running series, the military soap opera "Army Wives."

The story of life among military wives and husbands on an Army base recently finished its seventh season.

It had become a signature show for Lifetime, partly because it dealt with issues faced by real-life military families in the ongoing Iraqi and Afghanistani wars.

In making the announcement, Lifetime said it will celebrate the series with a two-hour special early next year bringing back many of the cast members.

"Army Wives" downshifted in its final year with the departure of Kim Delaney, an original "Wife" who had emerged as the show's central character.

Lifetime Executive Vice President and General Manager Rob Sharenow of Lifetime said, "There is no denying how special 'Army Wives' has been to both Lifetime and the television landscape.

"By taking on a very relevant and timely issue, it has brilliantly captured the challenges our military families endure and the bravery they and their loved ones display while serving our country."
