Sean Hayes ("Will & Grace") as the single father of a 14-year-old, played by Samantha Isler, in "Sean Saves the World."
"Sean Saves the World” has a good heart but could use a little saving itself.
Sean Hayes plays Sean, confirming we’re all on a first-name basis here. Sean is a tightly wound Type A who unexpectedly finds himself with full-time custody of his 14-year-old daughter, Ellie (Samantha Isler).
Like any normal 14-year-old, Ellie wants to be in nobody's custody. She wants to hang with her friends while retaining an option to come home for three hots and a cot, just like all other prisoners.
Sean and Ellie already are crowding the show with familiar sitcom stereotypes, but there's room for several more, starting with Linda Lavin as Lorna, Sean's pushy mom.
Did the TV industry pass a law saying every sitcom has to have an exasperating mom? And why doesn’t this law have a sunset clause for when we've seen her all her moves?
Sean also has a pushy best friend, played by Megan Hilty following her escape from “Smash.”
Hayes has good comic timing, as we know from “Will & Grace,” and he has seemingly unlimited energy to bounce around the set creating crises out of dustballs and saying all the wrong, well-intended things.
Since all his neuroses won’t fit into one sitcom set, he also has a job where his new boss, Max, compounds his home crises by demanding he put in more hours.
Alas, even with savvy veterans and a relatively fresh newcomer like Isler around him, little about “Sean Saves the World” will make most viewers keep coming back.
