Will Arnett in "The Millers" as a recently divorced guy and Margo Martindale as his new roommate, Mom.
Considering how many people are named Miller, it’s a safe bet you could look through the phone book, call any of them at random and get a more entertaining story than the one we get in CBS’ new sitcom “The Millers.”
“The Millers” wastes a cast of perfectly good actors in a situation with very little comedy.
Will Arnett plays Nathan Miller, a reporter who sees his recent divorce as an opportunity for a do-over on his love life.
But just as he’s ready to make his move, his father, Tom (Beau Bridges) announces he’s been inspired to divorce his mother, Carol (Margo Martindale), after 43 years of marriage.
That’s a real shame, because these cranky, argumentative and crude people were gift-wrapped for each other.
It’s a shame for Nathan because Mom moves in with him, blanketing his life with her overbearing meddling.
And not in a good way.
Tom, meanwhile, moves in with Nathan’s sister, Debbie (Jayma Mays, who should be calling on the hour to return to “Glee”).
“The Millers” seems to hint that it will branch out beyond annoying-parent jokes, but if the lazy crudity of the jokes is any indication, we don’t have all that much to look forward to.
The show gets some credit for acting, because the veteran cast members have good comic timing and coax the most out of their lines.
Trouble is, that’s like coaxing maximum flavor from a bowl of lawn clippings. You’re better off tossing them out and looking for dinner somewhere else.
