With the premiere of his new series this Thursday, Sean Hayes dropped by "Late Show" ... literally. He entered the show by running down the stairs up on the balcony level. When he reached the edge of the balcony, he simply leaped over it. It was a ridiculous and over-the-top entrance, which seems somehow appropriate for Hayes.
"I think maybe you blew a guy’s hat off," David Letterman pointed out. They then watched a slow motion shot of Hayes jumping onto a stunt mattress. Indeed, a crew member's hat flew off from the impact.
Hayes was on hand in promotion of "Sean Saves the World," which premieres on Thursday at 9 p.m. ET on NBC. He plays a single dad who comes out late in life as a gay man. NBC is pairing it with "The Michael J. Fox Show," creating an hour of nostalgia power.
Variety's Brian Lowry isn't sure about this new show, though. "Game as [Hayes] is ... the show is a tired litany of setups and rim-shots, with Hayes as a single parent grappling with the demands of working for an eccentric boss and raising a 14-year-old daughter," he wrote. "If the actor helped break ground on ‘Will & Grace,’ all he saves here is the TV-given right to roll out retreads.”
Catch Sean Hayes' return to television on "Sean Saves the World," Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC. "Late Show with David Letterman" airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on CBS.
