Vince Gilligan dropped by "The Colbert Report" to talk about the ending of his show, "Breaking Bad." The series creator was asked what was the worst thing Walter White had ever done. Despite Walt having amassed quite a list of nasty deeds, Gilligan had no problem pinpointing the worst ... and it was one of his more recent acts.
“It was the moment Walt said to Jesse, with apparent glee, ‘I watched Jane die. She choked to death and I could've saved her, and I didn’t.’" Gilligan said. "I think that was about the most sadistic nasty thing that he did.
Gilligan said that that moment was even worse than watching Jesse's girlfriend Jane die in the first place, "because in that moment he watched her die, there’s a lot of conflicting emotions going on in his face.”
“He was not purely sadistic very often," Gilligain said, but with those words to Jesse, he was. As for the ending of the series, Gilligan said that Walt had to die. It was established in the series pilot that he wasn't going to make it. But at least he went out on top -- in a way. The series finale of "Breaking Bad" was the highest-rated episode yet, with more than 10 million viewers tuning in.
"The Colbert Report" airs Monday through Thursday at 11:30 p.m. ET on Comedy Central.
