Actress Caitriona Balfe is set to star in Starz's 'Outlander' series, based on the books by Diana Gabaldon.

Caitriona Balfe has landed the coveted role of Claire Randall in the forthcoming Starz adaptation of Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" series.

Starz and Sony Pictures announced the casting Wednesday, making Balfe the series' romantic lead opposite Sam Heugan's Jamie Fraser.

In Gabaldon's seven-book series, which began in 1991 and which has sold more than 25 million copies, Randall is a married World War II combat nurse who in 1945 suddenly finds herself transported 202 years into the past.

She meets Fraser and the story unfolds from there.

Starz, which is known for including graphic content in its original series, expects to premiere "Outlander" in 2014.

Producer Ronald D. Moore said in a statement, "The casting of Claire Randall was a long and difficult one because the role is so crucial to the success of our show.

" 'Outlander' is told from Claire's point of view and we experience the entire story through her eyes, so it was vital that we find exactly the right actor to play her. Caitriona wasn't on anyone's radar, she wasn't on any list, but when we saw her audition tape, we immediately knew she was someone special."

Balfe will be seen soon in "Escape Plan" with Arnold Schwarznegger and Sylvester Stallone. She also appeared in J.J. Abrams's "Super 8."

Filming on "Outlander" starts this month in Scotland.
