FX's dark "Sons of Anarchy" launched its sixth season Tuesday night by drawing more viewers than NBC's much-hyped "Million Second Quiz."

"Sons" also drew more viewers in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 age group than any other show on television Monday night.

"Sons" scored 5.87 million total viewers, according to Nielsen, edging "Million Second Quiz" with 5.83 million.

Including a repeat showing, "Sons" drew more than 8 million total viewers and 5.3 million in the 18-49 age group - the highest single-day total in FX history.

Neither "Sons" nor "Million Second" had the largest total audience of the night, however. "America's Got Talent" on NBC drew 9.15 million total viewers, followed closely by an "NCIS" rerun on CBS with 9.07 million.

Entering its penultimate season, "Sons of Anarchy" started with an event that was violent even by the show's dark standards.

"Million Second Quiz," which has no violence, will continue nightly through next Thursday. Ryan Seacrest hosts the show, which emanates live from New York.
