Get ready to take one hand out of your pocket and raise it in a fist bump to the almighty music gods. Because Alanis Morissette, the queen of '90s pop rock ballads, is heading to Broadway and taking "Jagged Little Pill" with her.
Yes, one of the greatest albums of all time, featuring post-grunge hits like "Ironic" and "You Oughta Know," is becoming a musical, slated for the 2014 theater calendar. We won't be alarmed if you're falling head over feet right now. It's not your fault.
A carousel of questions are already running through our heads. Will Alanis star in the production, Billie Joe Armstrong style? Will the orchestra consist only of acoustic guitars, harmonicas and flangers? Who, pray tell, will play Dave Coulier?
Here's what we do know: The 1995 album-turned musical will debut as a workshop production in 2014. The musical will also be called “Jagged Little Pill,” and will feature every song from the record, as well as some other Morissette-written songs and newly arranged pieces. The music man behind Green Day’s “American Idiot,” the Pulitzer-prize winning Tom Kitt, will provide orchestrations and arrangements.
“I look forward to taking the heart of 'Jagged Little Pill' and expanding its story, fleshing it out into ever deeper layers of emotionality, specificity, humanity, power, physicality, spirit and fabulism,” explained Morissette in a press release for the musical.
All hail, Alanis.
