'Jackass' bounces 'Gravity' from box office heights

Finally, someone defied “Gravity.”

The new Johnny Knoxville picture, “Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa,” bounced the Sandra Bullock-George Clooney space adventure film from the number one spot at the box office with $32 million in ticket sales in its debut weekend.

“Gravity” still racked up $20.3 million in its fourth weekend, good enough for second place.

“Bad Grandpa” is the fourth installment of the “Jackass” series since 2002. The movies have made millions on the strength of their adolescent humor and extremely low production costs — it was made for just $15 million, a tiny fraction of what it cost to make “Gravity.”

The critics don’t often play a supporting role.

“The movie is hysterical in the worst possible ways; ones that make you feel as if a public apology is due,” Betsy Sharkey wrote in the Los Angeles Times.

“Captain Phillips,” the modern-day pirate movie, stayed afloat in the third spot, while “The Counselor,” a violent, action thriller starring Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt, opened fourth with $8 million.
