The group is splitting so the brothers can work on individual projects.

The Jonas Brothers opened up about the dissolution of the band on "Good Morning America" on Wednesday, explaining the decision to go their separate ways.

Nick Jonas, the youngest of the brothers at 21, said that he initiated the breakup.

"We're family first and that's always been our main priority and so honestly within what we do as a group was really important," he said. "I came to the table with the guys ... and shared my heart with them and my feelings. I said, 'Look, I feel like we've had some complications within the group for a long time [and] without addressing them I think this train will fall off the tracks.'"

And derail, the train did.

"It was a tough conversation," Nick Jonas said. "It was the first time we really had that real conversation."

Joe Jonas, 24, said that they were hoping to keep the spirit of support from the band.

"It was just individual things that we were just butting heads about, whether it was the way to set up the music or even just personal opportunities," he said. "At some point we decided it was best to finish this and support each other on our own ventures."

The group formed in 2005. The recent rift, which looks to be a permanent one, began when the group canceled all 19 dates of their upcoming tour.

"There's a certain heaviness that comes with closing a chapter," Nick Jonas said. "It's impossible to say forever with anything, but I feel like we're playing it one step at a time right now."
