Haunted houses around the city are luring in thrill-seekers with new spine-tingling scares this Halloween season. The News’ scream team braved three spooky spots to see which ones deliver real goosebumps.
BLOOD MANOR
FEAR FACTOR: 3 GHOSTS
What’s New: The city’s most famous house of horror has added a “Carnival of Souls” circus, which brings your worst clown nightmares to life with painted Bozo heads dangling from the ceiling. There’s also a Jungle Terror cave crawling with gyrating ghouls in crop tops. Yikes.
Beware: Groping blindly through a pitch-black room, and a bloodthirsty butcher’s freezer full of pig corpses terrified Lauren Beltram, 19. “You had to touch them. There was no way around it,” she squeals. And watch out for the deformed, psychotic woman holding young girls hostage to steal their beauty. The actor playing her gutted victim strapped to a table is almost too convincing.
Review: Fun old favorites like the surprisingly sexy zombie strippers and the trick mirror that zombifies your face are back in full force. There are more screams of laughter than terror, however, in the 15-minute tour. Those looking for a true scare won’t find it worth the high price.
If You Dare: Tickets are $33.50-$35, students pay $25 on Oct. 17, 20 & 24, or get $5 off on your birthday with valid ID. Runs through Nov. 2. 163 Varick St. Bloodmanor.com.
NIGHTMARE: KILLERS2
FEAR FACTOR: 4 GHOSTS
What’s New:A fresh crop of actors playing real-life serial killers like Harrison Graham and Aileen Wuornos join fiends like Charles Manson and John Wayne Gacy in reenacting their gruesome crimes.
Beware: If you’re claustrophobic, crawling blindly through a padded maze is suffocating. Marking yourself with an X makes you a willing victim for the serial killers to throw you against a wall — or inside a crawlspace. “It was stressful,” admits John Conlu, 35, from Bay Ridge. “The actors were right in your face!”
Review: It’s terrifying because it’s true. These real-life monsters actually committed these crimes. There are some killer performances, but others (like “American Psycho’s” fictional Patrick Bateman) are dead on arrival. “It definitely delivers some good scares, but you might be expecting a little more for that price,” says Matthew McGee, 29, from the Bronx.
If You Dare: Tickets are $30-$35; or $20 for student at the door with ID, valid 1-hour prior to listed start times only. Runs through Nov. 3. 107 Suffolk St. Nightmarenyc.com.
