“Gravity” cannot be defied.
The Alfonso Cuaron-directed astronaut adventure starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney floated to the top spot at the box office for the second straight weekend, with $44.3 million in ticket sales — and that’s before the holiday Monday is even added in.
“They say what goes up must come down, but that’s not really true with ‘Gravity,’” said pun-loving Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak. “It’s a direct testament to the word of mouth on the movie.”
“Gravity” bowed last week with an out-of-this-world $55 million — the best October opening ever.
The Tom Hanks film “Captain Phillips” sailed to the second place spot with $26 million. Like “Gravity,” the pirate drama, directed by Paul Greengrass, is a high-minded action film and benefitted from good timing.
“The success of ‘Gravity’ will also bode well for ‘Captain Phillips,”’ said Rory Bruer, head of distribution for Sony Pictures, which released “Captain Phillips.” “This is the extraordinary kind of film that we think audiences will flock to over the next several months moving forward.”
Rounding out the top five were “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2” with $14.2 million; “Machete Kills” ($3.8 million); and “Runner Runner” ($3.7 million).
