Harrison Ford sees big box office potential as he looks out from the command desk in "Ender's Game."
Harrison Ford’s still got “Game” — his new sci-fi hit flew past the competition in its opening weekend.
“Enders Game,” the outer-space military allegory based on the novel by Orson Scott Card, earned $28 million — despite brutal reviews and a threatened boycott by some marriage equality advocates angry over Card’s comments in 2009 condemning same-sex nuptials.
Two other critic-proof flicks — Johnny Knoxville’s "Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa" and the geezer comedy “Last Vegas” with phoned-in performances by Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline — were the next best, with $20.5 million and $16.5 million in tickets sold, respectively.
The animated movie “Free Birds,” with characters voiced by Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson and Amy Poehler, opened in the fourth spot, with $16.2 million.
And “Gravity” held onto the fifth position with $13.1 over the weekend, bringing the space saga’s domestic total to $220 million.
