Katy Perry now top Twitter celebrity — beats Justin Bieber

Katy Perry has roared past Justin Bieber on Twitter as the most popular celebrity on the site, reports The Verge.

The 19-year-old pop star held the title for nine months before Perry's more than 46 million followers surpassed his. While the race seems to be neck and neck as the "Roar" singer currently has just about 2,000 more followers than the Biebs, both pop stars’ Twitter fan base is constantly increasing.

Still, Perry, 29, currently sits atop the social-media-site's throne, succeeding its last queen, Lady Gaga. Twitter followers were gaga about the "Applause" singer, whose longstanding crown was held from 2010 until January when Bieber took the lead.

Gaga isn't going away easily as she still ranks third with 40 million followers. But she has some stiff competition close behind - - President Barack Obama has 39 million followers, while Taylor Swift has 36 million.

Perry's Oct. 22nd release date of her new album "Prism" has caused quite a buzz around the pop princess as of late, which may have led more devotees to trek to her Twitter page and push the follow button. But John Mayer's lady-love knows how to utilize the monster that is social media.

"I feel like I've learned how to tame that social media dragon," she told USA Today in a previous interview.

She continues to keep fans abreast of what she's doing by sporadically posting updates.

"GOOD morning! (from TOKYO)," she tweeted Oct. 30. "I woke up to the news that we are #1 with the #PRISM debut & become the biggest record by a pop female this year!

"For that I say THANK YOU," she continued. "I hope you are enjoying all the colors #PRISM has to offer. I promise to continue to give back … Tour next year …"
