Box office: 'Gravity' remains strong, outpaces 'Carrie'

This month, there's just no denying the force of "Gravity."

Earning the strongest October opening at the box office ever, the outer space thriller directed by Alfonso Cuaron took in another $9 million on Friday, according to estimates, bringing it close to $150 million in earnings. The film was expected to bring in another $30 million to $35 million this weekend.

Sony Pictures' "Carrie," a remake of the 1976 adaptation of the Stephen King novel, was tracking for more conservative numbers, according to audience surveys. Starring 16-year-old Chloe Grace Moretz in the place of Sissy Spacek in the title role, the film earned $6.6 million on Friday, according to estimates.

With only a 50% positive rating, according to the film review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes, the updated "Carrie" received middling reviews, and many critics cited Brian De Palma's original movie as leaving too indelible an impression for the new film to overcome.

Elsewhere, the action movie "Escape Plan," starring aging action stars Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, fell flat in its debut with just over $3 million in estimated ticket sales on Friday. The film is tracking behind the Tom Hanks-led thriller "Captain Phillips," which earned just over $5 million, according to estimates, to put it on track for third place.

The animated sequel "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2" is on pace to round out the top five with $2.5 million in estimated earnings on Friday. In limited release, WikiLeaks-themed newcomer "The Fifth Estate" looks to be a slow starter, taking in just over half a million dollars, according to estimates.
