Picking the early winners and losers in TV's new season

With the fall TV season six weeks old, more or less, it’s not too soon to call a few winners in some key prime-time network showdowns.

Okay, those showdowns may not have the flash they had when the broadcast networks were the only game in town, but there still have been some interesting matchups. Here’s how a few of them are shaking out.

Sunday, 9 p.m.: This isn’t a new matchup, or a new result. CBS’ “The Good Wife” is well ahead of ABC’s “Revenge” in total viewers, but “Revenge” is ahead in younger viewers. ABC is happy.

Monday, 10 p.m.: NBC’s “The Blacklist” is clobbering CBS’ “Hostages,” which is probably headed for cancellation. “The Blacklist” has “The Voice” as a lead-in, which helps, but the James Spader show has also built a following of its own. It’s about even with ABC’s “Castle” in total viewers and well ahead among younger viewers.

Tuesday, 8 p.m.: CBS’ powerhouse “NCIS” is leagues ahead of ABC’s new “Marvel: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” in total viewers, 18.6 million to 7.2 million last week. But “Agents” is almost even in its share of younger viewers, which makes ABC very happy.

Tuesday, 10 p.m.: NBC put “Chicago Fire” up against CBS’ popular “Person of Interest,” which moved to a new night. “Person” still has a big lead in total viewers, but “Chicago Fire” has led among younger viewers, so both teams are happy.

Wednesday, 10 p.m.: NBC saw an opportunity here, putting its new “Ironside” up against ABC’s second-year “Nashville.” The only winner so far is CBS’ “CSI,” which is getting on in years, but has done far better than either rival. “Ironside” has already been canceled and reports say “Nashville” is shaky.

Thursday, 8:30 p.m.: CBS’ “The Millers” walked all over NBC’s “Welcome to the Family.” “Welcome” was a better show, but viewers didn’t see it that way. “The Millers” drew five times the audience, and “Welcome” is now history. “The Millers” does have TV’s most popular sitcom, “The Big Bang Theory,” as a valuable lead-in.

Thursday, 9 p.m.: No contest between resurrected sitcom veterans here. CBS’ “The Crazy Ones,” with Robin Williams, is more than doubling the audience for NBC’s “Sean Saves the World” with Sean Hayes.

Thursday, 9:30 p.m.: NBC had big hopes for “The Michael J. Fox Show” challenging CBS’ aging “Two and a Half Men.” Unfortunately for Michael, “Men” also has 21/2 half times the audience — and almost twice as many younger viewers.
